Vonage loses appeal, now owes Verizon $117.5 million (Unlocking Mobile)

Vonage loses appeal, now owes Verizon $117.5 million
Filed under: CellphonesA follow-up to our earlier story regarding Verizon’s patent lawsuit against Vonage: the latter company has lost its appeal against the former, and is now looking at having to pay the full $117.5 million settlement, plus $2.5 million to charity. It’s been a bad few days for Vonage indeed, with the company’s shares dropping 87 percent since IPO, and a tenth of its workforce out of a job. When you’ve hit rock bottom, the only way is up, right?[Via Slashdot] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Nokia patent app reveals Sidekick wannabe
Filed under: Cellphones We’re pretty sure this isn’t the first time someone outside of Danger conjured up images of a Sidekick wannabe, and while we’ve certainly seen a real fake version before, Nokia is apparently toying with the idea of kicking out a legitimate contender. In a recent patent application, Nokia details its vision for “compact devices with turn and slide concept,” which looks an awful lot like a Sidekick save for the twistable apparatus on the side. To move the display and reveal the QWERTY keypad, users must turn the side-mounted knob, which subsequently shifts the LCD upwards and back while giving your thumbs access to the keys beneath. We’re still on the fence with the whole winding approach, but it’s an interesting deviation to the norm, regardless.[Via UnwiredView] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

700MHz band: future home to worldwide mobile broadband standard
Filed under: Cellphones, Wireless If you’ve been losing sleep over not knowing precisely what was going to happen to all that spectrum space that will be freed up when the imminent analog-to-digital cutover takes place, your insomnia is about to be (at least partially) cured. The US of A apparently pushed hard for a worldwide consensus on spectrum use — suggesting that a common approach was more reasonable than each nation choosing separate frequencies for next-generation services — and sure enough, it ended up getting exactly what it wanted. Apparently, the 700MHz band will now be reserved for a mobile broadband standard accessible throughout much of the globe, including most of North America, Central America, South America, Europe, China, India, South Korea and Japan. Of note, Europe was able to land a concession that enables it to offer up “about half of the bandwidth available for mobile services in their region” compared to what is offered elsewhere, but the agreement definitely makes the forthcoming auction that much more interesting.[Via RCRNews, image courtesy of toddemslie] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Wholesaling of D block spectrum okayed by FCC
Filed under: Cellphones, WirelessLanding an agreement to create a worldwide mobile broadband standard with the freed up 700MHz band isn’t the only good news going on in the spectrum world, as the FCC has also waived a previous regulation that would require winners of the D block segment to not wholesale more than 50-percent of its capacity. Now, the winner will be able to wholesale up to 100-percent of the capacity so long as it abides by the other guidelines surrounding D block, most notable of which is the provision that requires the victorious bidder to “build out a nationwide wireless network that is good enough to meet public safety specifications for coverage and redundancy.” The move is seen as one that will widen the range of potential bidders and encourage small business participation, and for consumers, it could offer up more competition in the mobile services marketplace. Sounds like a surefire win-win, eh?[Via RCRNews, image courtesy of toddemslie]Read – FCC D block waiver [PDF]Read – Explanation of D block spectrum Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Vodafone to have exclusive rights to 3G iPhone in Q1?
Filed under: Cellphones, Portable Audio, Portable VideoIt’s been awhile since we’ve had a decent 3G iPhone rumor to kick about. Perhaps it was the collective disappointment of the 2.5G release on Europe which deflated all the mongering. Whatever it was, we all know it’s coming, it’s just a question of when. Well, the gossip coming out of Italy calls for a Q1 release of a UMTS iPhone. Italian site Morse.IT claims to have spoken to high-level sources and “confirms” in no uncertain terms that Vodafone has signed an exclusive deal with Apple. Right, the same company currently suing T-Mobile in Germany for their iPhone exclusivity. The launch of the 3G iPhone would occur simultaneously in all countries where the carrier operates but will not be announced until after the holidays (MacWorld?) to avoid impacting sales of the existing iPhone. The timing jibes well with other rumors calling for a 3G release before May. Still, a Vodafone iPhone sold in the UK and Germany would seem a violation of those long-term exclusive deals presumably signed with Apple by O2 and T-Mobile, right? Sure, unless of course, those contract were for rights to the “iPhone,” not the “iPhone 3G” you silly lawyers. Motorola and T-Mobile sort out Sidekick Slide issues
Filed under: CellphonesAfter a few days of investigation, it looks like Motorola and T-Mobile have figured what was behind that nasty Sidekick Slide bug that caused the devices to shut off when flipped open. According to our friends at Moto, the root cause was “a minor issue relating to the battery contacts,” and a solution is being tested right now and should be available by next week, when Slides are expected to go back on sale at T-Mo stores. A speedy resolution, to be sure, but we’re still amazed a bug like that got through in the first place. Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Samsung, AT&T announce A747 “SLM” flip
Filed under: Cellphones So the Samsung A747 for AT&T is finally here, ‘cept it’s not the A747. Instead, the slim clamshell has been appropriately christened the “SLM.” Think of the SLM as a juiced version of the also very thin A717, carrying over the 2 megapixel cam and attractive brushed metal exterior while adding a much larger 96 x 96 external display and support for Napster Mobile — a first for AT&T. Get the SLM beginning November 23 for $150 after a $50 rebate on a two-year contract. Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

iPhone users can now drop data plan, save $20 per month
Filed under: Cellphones, Wireless For those of you who keep your iPhone connected via WiFi entirely more often than through EDGE, listen up. As of now, it appears that iPhone users can login to their AT&T myAccount page, surf on over to the “Add / Manage Features” section and opt out of the (previously required) monthly data plan. Making the change will save you a whole $20 per month — or $240 per year, if you prefer that perspective. Hello Kitty gets two new Bluetooth headsets
Filed under: Cellphones What better to go with your shiny new Hello Kitty-themed phone than — wait for it — a Bluetooth headset doused in cuteness? Apparently, a pair of these very devices have managed to surface, and we’re sure gals everywhere are clamoring to get their hands, er, ear under one. Granted, we’ve no idea how well these things would actually work (nor how much they’ll cost), but the adorable factor is undeniably through the roof. Lenovo’s i909 NES gamer makes our hearts beat at 8-bits per operation
Filed under: Cellphones, Gaming Well, well, would you look at that, Lenovo’s i909 gaming phone. Regulators put pressure on Sprint to remedy issues with iDEN network
Filed under: CellphonesAlthough Sprint has coughed up some $1 billion over the past few years in order to nix the interference between 2,200 public safety agencies across the US and its iDEN network, it apparently hasn’t done enough. Reportedly, the FCC has warned Sprint that it “could lose access to the signal spectrum used by its Nextel- and Boost Mobile-branded wireless services” if it doesn’t remedy the problem by June of 2008. Supposedly, Sprint is “working hard” to settle the issue, but it’s not wasting any time asking the US Court of Appeals to get involved. The carrier claims that these shut down threats could force it to halt signups of Nextel-branded customers, and furthermore, around three million public-safety workers would purportedly lose service if the FCC did indeed shut down the Nextel network. ‘Course, industry analysts are suggesting that regulators wouldn’t really go through with shutting it down, but if nothing else, this should light a fire under Sprint to expedite the process.[Via PhoneScoop] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Debunk: Yes, Virginia, the iPhone libtiff exploit can also be used for mischief
Filed under: Cellphones We’re not really certain why anyone’s surprised by the iPhone libtiff exploit at this point — it’s the entire basis of the 1.1.1 jailbreak, after all — but apparently Fast Company didn’t get the memo, because it just posted up this video of “self-employed security consultant” Rik Farrow using the ‘sploit to surreptitiously install a voice recorder on an unpatched 1.1.1 iPhone. That would have been huge news when the iPhone first came out, obviously (and look at that — it was) but FC and Rik are a little late, here: the libtiff exploit has already been patched, first by the Jailbreakme 1.1.1 web-jailbreak and then by Apple in the 1.1.2 update. There’s no doubt that it’s a serious vulnerability — and Rik’s confidently paranoid tone in this video makes it a must-watch — but it’s funny to see people get all worked up over a patched security hole hackers have been exploiting on a variety of devices for some time now.Continue reading Debunk: Yes, Virginia, the iPhone libtiff exploit can also be used for mischief Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Unlocking Mobile – China Mobile in talks with Apple over iPhone

November 15th, 2007

China Mobile in talks with Apple over iPhone
Filed under: CellphonesBringing the iPhone to Europe was big, but potentially bigger for Apple is the Chinese market, which probably explains why China Mobile CEO Wang Jianzhou is in talks with the company over its much publicized handset. Mr. Jianzhou admitted in a speech at the GSM Association’s Mobile Asia Congress that he doesn’t like the revenue sharing agreements that Apple has managed to wrangle: you and every other mobile executive worldwide, Wang! But who knows, maybe the fact that China Mobile has 349.66 million subscribers will be enough for Apple to make one two very big exceptions and do a more traditional deal. Whatever happens, the Chinese market is likely to throw some curveballs at Apple’s usual pitch. Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Keynetik’s motion tracking prototype handset spotted in the wild
Filed under: Cellphones Let’s face it: the device pictured above isn’t likely to arrive in America (in that form, anyway) anytime soon, but apparently, the hardware is the least important aspect. InfoSyncWorld was able to get its paws around Keynetik’s prototype handset, which currently sports the same name and relies on a user interface with (surprise, surprise) the very same title, too. Apparently, this mobile — which looks like a cross between a mobile gaming unit and a PDA — includes a UI that is surprisingly intuitive thanks to the motion tracking support and its ability to take commands from two joysticks and four buttons. For instance, users can select icons by simply tilting the device in the desired direction and subsequently pressing a button, which reportedly makes browsing through tunes and contact lists a lesson in simplicity. Unfortunately, there’s no telling if or when Keynetik’s creation will ever go commercial, but feel free to check out a few more glimpses of the first edition after the jump.Continue reading Keynetik’s motion tracking prototype handset spotted in the wild Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

HTC’s Touch Cruise with GPS gets official
Filed under: Cellphones HTC just went live with their Touch Cruise. “Touch” as in that TouchFLO interface, “Cruise” as in GPS-enabled. The third addition to HTC’s Touch lineup packs HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, a 3 megapixel camera, microSD expansion, and a 2.8-inch touch-screen lying on top of a Windows Mobile 6 foundation. Oh, and it’s loaded with TomTom Navigator 6 software to make the most of that GPS receiver. Yup, everything mostly what we thought it would be. Available this month from European retailers or SIM-free direct from HTC. Update: We’re still digging but HTC was a bit unkind by not providing specific country launch information or supported radio bands. At the moment, this looks like Europe-only.Update 2: Good news, specs are now posted and it’s quad-band GSM like we originally heard with HSDPA/UMTS riding 2100MHz for Europe and 850/1900MHz for the ol’ US. The Nokia N82 gets official
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds Right on schedule, Nokia has announced its latest addition to the multimedia-centric (and game-riffic) Nseries line, the N82 candybar. The phone clearly bears a striking resemblance to its recently announced cousin — the N81 slider — but the N82 ups the ante with a 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens paired with autofocus (naturally) and a xenon flash. Other features include microSD expansion, support for Nokia’s own Ovi goodies, WiFi, assisted GPS, a 2.4 inch QVGA display front and center, and an honest-to-goodness 3.5mm headphone jack like the N95 before it. The GSM / EDGE radio does the quadband thing, but HSDPA’s available only on the 2100MHz band — so North Americans with an appetite for data need not apply. Others can buy the N82 starting today for about €450 ($657). Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Nokia’s patent-licensing case against Qualcomm dropped by Dutch court
Filed under: CellphonesLast we heard from the seemingly endless Nokia / Qualcomm kvetch-fest, the former company was soliciting the ITC’s help in barring US Qualcomm chip imports, but for those wishing on their lucky stars that this spat would simply vanish into the night, we’ve got marginally good news. Apparently, a trio of judges in a Dutch court ruled that it didn’t have jurisdiction to rule on the phone maker’s claims outside of The Netherlands, thus, the patent-licensing case against Qualcomm was dismissed. Aside from claiming that its “jurisdiction was limited,” the court also stated that Nokia’s gripe was “too broad to give a reasoned decision.” Of note, a German court also dismissed the case just last month on “similar grounds,” but if you were counting on Nokia to just take the news in stride, we doubt you’ll be pleased to hear that it’s already “considering if it will appeal the decision.” Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Sony, NXP get official with Moversa joint venture
Filed under: Cellphones, WirelessChances are, you had forgotten all about Sony and NXP’s little initiative to cooperate on a NFC (near-field communications) standard, but the two seem to have finally worked out all the kinks and are ready to move forward. The joint venture, dubbed Moversa, will seek to “drive global adoption of contactless smart card applications in mobile phones,” and it’s already planning to develop, produce and market a Universal Secure Access Module (U-SAM) that “incorporates both MIFARE and FeliCa operating systems and applications.” Essentially, the duo is hoping to accelerate the adoption of integrated contactless support, which would enable users to make payments (among other things) easily via their handset. If you’re curious about availability, we’re hearing that samples should be shipped out in mid-2008, but commercial deployments aren’t scheduled to happen until the end of next year.[Via Yahoo / Reuters] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!
