According to our friends at Moto, the root cause was “a minor issue relating to the battery contacts,” and a solution is being tested right now and should be available by next week, when Slides are expected to go back on sale at T-Mo stores. Sony rekindles rumors of PSP phone
Filed under: Cellphones, GamingIt’s been a hot minute since we’ve heard any marginally believable chatter surrounding the so-called PSP phone, but the idea of such a device has been given new life thanks to Sony Computer Entertainment co-chief operating officer Jim Ryan. Apparently, Mr. Ryan told the India Times that the “PlayStation is a proven success and so is Sony Ericsson,” and that “convergence with the two arms working together is definitely plausible.” Granted, he did note that it could be quite some time before such a device would see the market, and that if indeed it did, it would likely resemble a handheld gaming system with a phone blended in and not vice-versa. How to sync an iPhone over WiFi without iTunes
Filed under: Cellphones, Portable AudioNow that the Zune has upped the ante by including WiFi syncing out of the box, it looks like owners of other devices are starting to rig up solutions of their own — and the iPhone setup developed by eddanx seems to come closest to the ease of the Zune. The system relies on the WinAmp plugin ml_ipod, which supports syncing to shared folders, and requires a jailbroken iPhone and a little SSH / SFTP softshoe. Of course, by giving up iTunes, you give up contact, calendar, movie, and phone syncing as well, but who cares — you’re wireless now, baby. Verizon launches Kyocera KPC680 EV-DO Rev. A ExpressCard

The Kyocera KPC680 ExpressCard is available now for anyone interested, and enables BroadbandAccess users to reach average download speeds of 600kbps to 1.4Mbps and upload speeds that range from 500kbps to 800kbps when situated in a Rev. A area. Sony denies the PlayStation Phone, as usual

Just shortly after Sony Computer Entertainment co-chief operating officer Jim Ryan opened his mouth and rekindled rumors of a PlayStation Phone, Sony has now shot back and flatly denied that any such device is in the works. Samsung’s BlackJack II fittingly launches on Black Friday for $150

Regulators put pressure on Sprint to remedy issues with iDEN network
Filed under: CellphonesAlthough Sprint has coughed up some $1 billion over the past few years in order to nix the interference between 2,200 public safety agencies across the US and its iDEN network, it apparently hasn’t done enough. Reportedly, the FCC has warned Sprint that it “could lose access to the signal spectrum used by its Nextel- and Boost Mobile-branded wireless services” if it doesn’t remedy the problem by June of 2008. Supposedly, Sprint is “working hard” to settle the issue, but it’s not wasting any time asking the US Court of Appeals to get involved. Vonage loses appeal, now owes Verizon $117.5 million

Nokia patent app reveals Sidekick wannabe
Filed under: Cellphones We’re pretty sure this isn’t the first time someone outside of Danger conjured up images of a Sidekick wannabe, and while we’ve certainly seen a real fake version before, Nokia is apparently toying with the idea of kicking out a legitimate contender. In a recent patent application, Nokia details its vision for “compact devices with turn and slide concept,” which looks an awful lot like a Sidekick save for the twistable apparatus on the side. To move the display and reveal the QWERTY keypad, users must turn the side-mounted knob, which subsequently shifts the LCD upwards and back while giving your thumbs access to the keys beneath. 700MHz band: future home to worldwide mobile broadband standard
Filed under: Cellphones, Wireless If you’ve been losing sleep over not knowing precisely what was going to happen to all that spectrum space that will be freed up when the imminent analog-to-digital cutover takes place, your insomnia is about to be (at least partially) cured. The US of A apparently pushed hard for a worldwide consensus on spectrum use — suggesting that a common approach was more reasonable than each nation choosing separate frequencies for next-generation services — and sure enough, it ended up getting exactly what it wanted. Apparently, the 700MHz band will now be reserved for a mobile broadband standard accessible throughout much of the globe, including most of North America, Central America, South America, Europe, China, India, South Korea and Japan. Wholesaling of D block spectrum okayed by FCC
Filed under: Cellphones, WirelessLanding an agreement to create a worldwide mobile broadband standard with the freed up 700MHz band isn’t the only good news going on in the spectrum world, as the FCC has also waived a previous regulation that would require winners of the D block segment to not wholesale more than 50-percent of its capacity. Now, the winner will be able to wholesale up to 100-percent of the capacity so long as it abides by the other guidelines surrounding D block, most notable of which is the provision that requires the victorious bidder to “build out a nationwide wireless network that is good enough to meet public safety specifications for coverage and redundancy.” The move is seen as one that will widen the range of potential bidders and encourage small business participation, and for consumers, it could offer up more competition in the mobile services marketplace. Vodafone to have exclusive rights to 3G iPhone in Q1?

Perhaps it was the collective disappointment of the 2.5G release on Europe which deflated all the mongering. Whatever it was, we all know it’s coming, it’s just a question of when. Well, the gossip coming out of Italy calls for a Q1 release of a UMTS iPhone. Italian site Morse.IT claims to have spoken to high-level sources and “confirms” in no uncertain terms that Vodafone has signed an exclusive deal with Apple. Right, the same company currently suing T-Mobile in Germany for their iPhone exclusivity. The launch of the 3G iPhone would occur simultaneously in all countries where the carrier operates but will not be announced until after the holidays (MacWorld?) to avoid impacting sales of the existing iPhone. The timing jibes well with other rumors calling for a 3G release before May. Still, a Vodafone iPhone sold in the UK and Germany would seem a violation of those long-term exclusive deals presumably signed with Apple by O2 and T-Mobile, right? Sure, unless of course, those contract were for rights to the “iPhone,” not the “iPhone 3G” you silly lawyers. Debunk: Yes, Virginia, the iPhone libtiff exploit can also be used for mischief
Filed under: Cellphones We’re not really certain why anyone’s surprised by the iPhone libtiff exploit at this point — it’s the entire basis of the 1.1.1 jailbreak, after all — but apparently Fast Company didn’t get the memo, because it just posted up this video of “self-employed security consultant” Rik Farrow using the ‘sploit to surreptitiously install a voice recorder on an unpatched 1.1.1 iPhone. That would have been huge news when the iPhone first came out, obviously (and look at that — it was) but FC and Rik are a little late, here: the libtiff exploit has already been patched, first by the Jailbreakme 1.1.1 web-jailbreak and then by Apple in the 1.1.2 update. China Mobile in talks with Apple over iPhone
Filed under: CellphonesBringing the iPhone to Europe was big, but potentially bigger for Apple is the Chinese market, which probably explains why China Mobile CEO Wang Jianzhou is in talks with the company over its much publicized handset. Mr. Jianzhou admitted in a speech at the GSM Association’s Mobile Asia Congress that he doesn’t like the revenue sharing agreements that Apple has managed to wrangle: you and every other mobile executive worldwide, Wang! But who knows, maybe the fact that China Mobile has 349.66 million subscribers will be enough for Apple to make one two very big exceptions and do a more traditional deal. Keynetik’s motion tracking prototype handset spotted in the wild
Filed under: Cellphones Let’s face it: the device pictured above isn’t likely to arrive in America (in that form, anyway) anytime soon, but apparently, the hardware is the least important aspect. InfoSyncWorld was able to get its paws around Keynetik’s prototype handset, which currently sports the same name and relies on a user interface with (surprise, surprise) the very same title, too. Apparently, this mobile — which looks like a cross between a mobile gaming unit and a PDA — includes a UI that is surprisingly intuitive thanks to the motion tracking support and its ability to take commands from two joysticks and four buttons. For instance, users can select icons by simply tilting the device in the desired direction and subsequently pressing a button, which reportedly makes browsing through tunes and contact lists a lesson in simplicity. HTC’s Touch Cruise with GPS gets official
Filed under: Cellphones HTC just went live with their Touch Cruise. “Touch” as in that TouchFLO interface, “Cruise” as in GPS-enabled. The third addition to HTC’s Touch lineup packs HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, a 3 megapixel camera, microSD expansion, and a 2.8-inch touch-screen lying on top of a Windows Mobile 6 foundation. Oh, and it’s loaded with TomTom Navigator 6 software to make the most of that GPS receiver. Yup, everything mostly what we thought it would be. Available this month from European retailers or SIM-free direct from HTC. Update: We’re still digging but HTC was a bit unkind by not providing specific country launch information or supported radio bands. Nokia’s patent-licensing case against Qualcomm dropped by Dutch court
Filed under: CellphonesLast we heard from the seemingly endless Nokia / Qualcomm kvetch-fest, the former company was soliciting the ITC’s help in barring US Qualcomm chip imports, but for those wishing on their lucky stars that this spat would simply vanish into the night, we’ve got marginally good news. Apparently, a trio of judges in a Dutch court ruled that it didn’t have jurisdiction to rule on the phone maker’s claims outside of The Netherlands, thus, the patent-licensing case against Qualcomm was dismissed. Sony, NXP get official with Moversa joint venture

The joint venture, dubbed Moversa, will seek to “drive global adoption of contactless smart card applications in mobile phones,” and it’s already planning to develop, produce and market a Universal Secure Access Module (U-SAM) that “incorporates both MIFARE and FeliCa operating systems and applications.” Essentially, the duo is hoping to accelerate the adoption of integrated contactless support, which would enable users to make payments (among other things) easily via their handset. New iTunes hints at iPhone disk use and voice memos?
Filed under: CellphonesIf you hadn’t heard, iTunes 7.5 hit today, and while we were all busy yawning at the seemingly insignificant update, MacRumors Forums user “FreeState” was checking out some localized strings and tracked down a few gems. Number 4320.069 asks if you’re “sure you want to manually manage your music on your iPhone?” Yeah, we’re sure. While 4320.073 teases that “Enabling the iPhone for disk use requires manually ejecting the iPhone before each disconnect, even when automatically syncing music.” We can live with those demands. Mr. 4320.075 is a bit more generic, but 4320.082 is the sexiest of the bunch: “The iPhone “^1″ contains new voice memos. Symbian, Nokia, Microsoft and Apple downplay Android relevance

Google’s Android platform and the Open Handset Alliance: a quick round-up
Filed under: Cellphones, HandheldsCarefully orchestrated announcements for broad, sweeping initiatives like the one staged by Google today don’t always do a great job of diving straight into the meat and telling it like it is, so we thought we’d boil down the Android and Open Handset Alliance sitch as best we could into a tight, easy to digest series of bullets. If this list is still wider than your attention span, though, just know this: you can pick up your Google-powered phone in the latter half of 2008. At its core, Android forms the basis for Google’s operating system and supporting software for phones. In Google’s own words, it’s a software stack. Two separate but related entities form the basis for today’s announcement: the Linux-based Android mobile platform (a result of Google’s 2005 acquisition of a start-up of the same name) and the Open Handset Alliance, a 33-strong group of device manufacturers, component manufacturers, software companies, and carriers that have committed to working with Android. There is no cut and dried “Gphone” and Google doesn’t intend (or at least it hasn’t indicated an intent) to enter the hardware business. Instead, it’ll leave that to established players like HTC, LG, and Samsung — and theoretically, anyone else that wants to have a go at it since the Android platform and its code base is wide open. Unlike the platform itself, there’s no guarantee that devices based on the Android platform will be open to third party developers. Google says that’ll be left to manufacturers and carriers to be decide, although it doubts they’ll choose to lock them down (hmm, has Google ever worked with a carrier before?) Nokia, Apple (on whose board Google CEO Eric Schmidt sits), Palm, and Microsoft are notably absent from the alliance. Palm has come out today to announce that it intends to continue to integrate Google services into its future products. Carriers currently in the alliance include China Mobile, KDDI, NTT DoCoMo, Sprint Nextel, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, and T-Mobile. T-Mobile and Sprint Nextel are the two national US carriers that are signed up; AT&T and Verizon are not. The first Android-powered devices are expected in the second half of 2008. Rumor has it that Google has been using an HTC-sourced device, the “Dream,” to demonstrate Android to potential partners. Russian spy plane to be re-purposed as cellphone tower
Filed under: Cellphones, Transportation We’ve already seen balloons used to provide cellphone service, but it looks like the Russians could soon be putting that setup to shame, with one of its Myasishchev M-55 spy planes now reportedly set to be demoed as a makeshift cellphone tower early next year. That’ll apparently happen in Malaysia over the course of February and March, but it seems like that could just be the beginning, with one “unnamed Western firm” said to be in discussions with the aircraft’s manufacturer about the possibility of resuming production of the planes specifically for this purpose. AT&T teams with Napster (again) for wireless downloads

AT&T and Napster have quite the history of offering up lackluster deals to customers — first with that $14.95 Napster To Go scam on Cingular, then the free Napster To Go on AT&T — but they’re finally doing it up right and offering wireless downloads from Napster’s 5 million strong catalog to AT&T’s music-starved subscribers. Right now your options with the carrier are eMusic for some spendy wireless downloads, or the iPhone. Unfortunately, while Napster bests eMusic on selection, the price remains the same at $7.49 per five songs, and these ain’t no DRM-free affair like eMusic. The Napster service will also allow for $1.99 a la carte purchases, something eMusic lacks, and with every purchase you receive an email on your PC to help you download a copy of the track. Verizon and Sprint have quite the jump on AT&T when it comes to over-the-air music downloads, but we’ll see if AT&T can start to gain some ground starting early next month when the service launches. Filed under: Cellphones The rise of the cameraphone has certainly changed the face of journalism, and old-guard wire service Reuters isn’t about to get passed by — the company has entered into a long-term partnership with Nokia to develop new mobile reporting technologies, and the two companies have recently completed trials of an N95-based “Mobile Journalism Tookit” that takes moblogging to a whole new level. Reporters were given a hardware bundle that consisted of an N95, a Nokia SU-8W portable keyboard, a Sony condenser mic with special N95 adapter, a tripod, and two Power Monkey power stations, including the solar-capable Explorer, all of which linked into a custom mobile CMS that allows stories to be posted almost instantly. Reuters also partnered with Comvu for GPS-linked video streaming, and the N95 also provides a host of other metadata about each piece of content as it’s filed. Although the trial is now over, both Reuters and Nokia plan on using the kits to teach journalism students and to promote the cause of citizen journalism. Apple shipped 1,119,000 iPhones in Q4 2007

That might meet or miss your expectations, but other sales bringing a smile to Jobs’ face and a cha-ching to his wallet include a 34% growth in Mac sales year to year and a 17% growth in iPods year to year — with 10.2 million iPods sold last quarter. Palm Treo 800w revealed?

We obviously know what’s up with the Centro and the 500 (namely the 500v), so the only missing ID in that lineup is the 800, successor to the 700-series flagship throne. Well, if this thing is the 800w we do kind of hope Palm tosses that fish back. Sharp develops “world’s thinnest” 2.2-inch QVGA mobile LCD
Filed under: Cellphones, Displays We’ve already seen Hitachi launch the “world’s slimmest” LCD TV today, so it’s rather fitting that Sharp comes through and delivers what it calls the “industry’s thinnest” mobile display. Granted, we’ve known this ultrathin 2.2-inch wonder was coming since April, but it’s always reassuring to see plans actually emerge from the drawing board. Nevertheless, this wee unit measures in just 0.01-millimeters thinner than a 1.9-inch version that AU Optronics was touting earlier this week (that’s 0.68-millimeters for those keeping score), and it features a 2,000:1 contrast ratio, 320 x 240 (QVGA) resolution, 176-degree viewing angle and an eight-millisecond response time that should be suitable for mobile TV viewing. Citizen unveils Bluetooth-enabled i:Virt watches

The i:Virt collection, which comes in four colors along with a metal-banded sibling, is capable of playing nice with your Bluetooth mobile, and moreover, they all boast a battery life of up to five days with BT turned on. Hands-on with Sprint’s LG Rumor handset

As a refresher, the LG Rumor is a Sprint foray into feature packed-ish handset for little or no money down, in this case $79 doesn’t get you EV-DO, but does get QWERTY, Bluetooth, Sprint Navigation, and a 1.3 megapixel shooter thrown in for good measure. Sure, we agree that it lacking EV-DO may be a deal breaker for some, we’re pretty confident that this is likely gonna be a winner for those just looking for a useful small handset. Samsung’s 5 megapixel G800 gets launched, available next month

Until recently, cameraphones were unquestionably still just phones with chintzy cams tacked on, but it looks like we’re finally getting to the point where the lines are truly blurred. Samsung’s new G800 slider is now official, packing a 5 megapixel autofocus camera in a rather attractive metallic form; that in itself isn’t terribly notable, considering we already have a handful of 5 megapixel handsets on the market. What is notable, though, is the added bonus of a xenon flash and 3x optical (yes, optical) zoom. Heck, from the back, you can barely tell it’s a phone at all. Add in the usual goodies like Bluetooth, HSDPA, and a generously sized QVGA display, and Samsung has a winner on its hands — or at least it would have a winner if only it’d launch stateside. Hands-on with the i-mate 8502 and 9502
Filed under: Cellphones We saw these fellas announced this morning so thought it only reasonable to get down to i-mate’s booth here at CTIA and get some shots of the 8502 and 9502. First thing we noticed about these handsets was the top shelf build quality and high-end heft factor — if you’re not feeling it both of these look and feel like a million bucks. Palm Treo 800w revealed?

We obviously know what’s up with the Centro and the 500 (namely the 500v), so the only missing ID in that lineup is the 800, successor to the 700-series flagship throne. Well, if this thing is the 800w we do kind of hope Palm tosses that fish back. Samsung BlackJack2 gets ready to launch on AT&T
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds Don’t get too excited — you can’t order it just yet — but AT&T’s at least ready to admit that the Samsung BlackJack2 exists. It seems the carrier’s pulling the same stunt it did with the Q9 Global, taking email addresses for notification of availability without giving any indication as to when it might be available. Compared to the original, the keyboard and d-pad both look considerably hotter, Windows Mobile 6 comes installed (just imagine the horror if it wasn’t!), “faster 3G speeds” are being touted, and perhaps most importantly, GPS capability is integrated.
