Unlocking Mobile – China Mobile in talks with Apple over iPhone

China Mobile in talks with Apple over iPhone
Filed under: CellphonesBringing the iPhone to Europe was big, but potentially bigger for Apple is the Chinese market, which probably explains why China Mobile CEO Wang Jianzhou is in talks with the company over its much publicized handset. Mr. Jianzhou admitted in a speech at the GSM Association’s Mobile Asia Congress that he doesn’t like the revenue sharing agreements that Apple has managed to wrangle: you and every other mobile executive worldwide, Wang! But who knows, maybe the fact that China Mobile has 349.66 million subscribers will be enough for Apple to make one two very big exceptions and do a more traditional deal. Whatever happens, the Chinese market is likely to throw some curveballs at Apple’s usual pitch. Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

A visual tour of Android’s UI
Filed under: Cellphones, Features Thanks to the helpful Android OS emulator included with the SDK, we’ve been able to take a magical journey through Google’s new mobile phone platform. We’ll just tell you now… the ride was a bit familiar — but hey, that’s what the open source community is there for. Keynetik’s motion tracking prototype handset spotted in the wild
Filed under: Cellphones Let’s face it: the device pictured above isn’t likely to arrive in America (in that form, anyway) anytime soon, but apparently, the hardware is the least important aspect. InfoSyncWorld was able to get its paws around Keynetik’s prototype handset, which currently sports the same name and relies on a user interface with (surprise, surprise) the very same title, too. Apparently, this mobile — which looks like a cross between a mobile gaming unit and a PDA — includes a UI that is surprisingly intuitive thanks to the motion tracking support and its ability to take commands from two joysticks and four buttons. For instance, users can select icons by simply tilting the device in the desired direction and subsequently pressing a button, which reportedly makes browsing through tunes and contact lists a lesson in simplicity. Unfortunately, there’s no telling if or when Keynetik’s creation will ever go commercial, but feel free to check out a few more glimpses of the first edition after the jump.Continue reading Keynetik’s motion tracking prototype handset spotted in the wild Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

HTC’s Touch Cruise with GPS gets official
Filed under: Cellphones HTC just went live with their Touch Cruise. “Touch” as in that TouchFLO interface, “Cruise” as in GPS-enabled. The third addition to HTC’s Touch lineup packs HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, a 3 megapixel camera, microSD expansion, and a 2.8-inch touch-screen lying on top of a Windows Mobile 6 foundation. Oh, and it’s loaded with TomTom Navigator 6 software to make the most of that GPS receiver. Yup, everything mostly what we thought it would be. Available this month from European retailers or SIM-free direct from HTC. Update: We’re still digging but HTC was a bit unkind by not providing specific country launch information or supported radio bands. At the moment, this looks like Europe-only.Update 2: Good news, specs are now posted and it’s quad-band GSM like we originally heard with HSDPA/UMTS riding 2100MHz for Europe and 850/1900MHz for the ol’ US. The Nokia N82 gets official
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds Right on schedule, Nokia has announced its latest addition to the multimedia-centric (and game-riffic) Nseries line, the N82 candybar. The phone clearly bears a striking resemblance to its recently announced cousin — the N81 slider — but the N82 ups the ante with a 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens paired with autofocus (naturally) and a xenon flash. Other features include microSD expansion, support for Nokia’s own Ovi goodies, WiFi, assisted GPS, a 2.4 inch QVGA display front and center, and an honest-to-goodness 3.5mm headphone jack like the N95 before it. The GSM / EDGE radio does the quadband thing, but HSDPA’s available only on the 2100MHz band — so North Americans with an appetite for data need not apply. Others can buy the N82 starting today for about €450 ($657). Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Nokia’s patent-licensing case against Qualcomm dropped by Dutch court
Filed under: CellphonesLast we heard from the seemingly endless Nokia / Qualcomm kvetch-fest, the former company was soliciting the ITC’s help in barring US Qualcomm chip imports, but for those wishing on their lucky stars that this spat would simply vanish into the night, we’ve got marginally good news. Apparently, a trio of judges in a Dutch court ruled that it didn’t have jurisdiction to rule on the phone maker’s claims outside of The Netherlands, thus, the patent-licensing case against Qualcomm was dismissed. Aside from claiming that its “jurisdiction was limited,” the court also stated that Nokia’s gripe was “too broad to give a reasoned decision.” Of note, a German court also dismissed the case just last month on “similar grounds,” but if you were counting on Nokia to just take the news in stride, we doubt you’ll be pleased to hear that it’s already “considering if it will appeal the decision.” Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Unlocking Mobile – Sony, NXP get official with Moversa joint venture

Sony, NXP get official with Moversa joint venture
Filed under: Cellphones, WirelessChances are, you had forgotten all about Sony and NXP’s little initiative to cooperate on a NFC (near-field communications) standard, but the two seem to have finally worked out all the kinks and are ready to move forward. The joint venture, dubbed Moversa, will seek to “drive global adoption of contactless smart card applications in mobile phones,” and it’s already planning to develop, produce and market a Universal Secure Access Module (U-SAM) that “incorporates both MIFARE and FeliCa operating systems and applications.” Essentially, the duo is hoping to accelerate the adoption of integrated contactless support, which would enable users to make payments (among other things) easily via their handset. If you’re curious about availability, we’re hearing that samples should be shipped out in mid-2008, but commercial deployments aren’t scheduled to happen until the end of next year.[Via Yahoo / Reuters] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Nokia’s 8800 Arte and Sapphire Arte for the nouveau riche
Filed under: Cellphones Are you a “style-conscious consumer?” Yeah, then the 3G Nokia 8800 Arte and Sapphire Arte are for you toots. Just as long as you’ve got a €1,000 pre-tax bounty saved up for the Arte or €1,150 for the Sapphire Arte when they ship in Q4 2007 and Q1 2008, respectively. For that you get a 2.0-inch QVGA OLED display, 3.2 megapixel camera, 1GB of built-in memory, an anti-fingerprint coating on the metal and glass, and a leather pouch with linen-lining to keep things tidy. A turn-to-mute feature allows owners to quiet their phone by simply turning it over — the phone equivalent of a huffy, raised-palm pirouette. It also ships with a Nokia BH-803 noise-cancelling Bluetooth headset which should help to minimize the “new money” whispers from behind your back.%Gallery-10187%  Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Samsung follows crowd, preps M4650 Windows Mobile (Unlocking Mobile) touchphone

Samsung follows crowd, preps M4650 Windows Mobile touchphone
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds Don’t be fooled: Samsung officially calls this the M4650 Multi-Touch, but get this, it doesn’t support multi-touch. It does support single touches of its 2.8 inch screen, though, which’ll have to do seeing how it lacks either numeric or QWERTY keypads. The Korean company is prepping the Windows Mobile 6-based touchphone for its domestic market, matching a recent trend toward keyless, finger-friendly input that LG, HTC, Apple, and others have adopted in recent months. A customized build of Windows Mobile isn’t the only trick up the handset’s sleeve, either: haptics give users a little bit of positive feedback when they make contact with the display, and when Office Mobile finally ceases to be entertaining, the terrestrial DMB tuner should come in handy. Ironically, the M4650 will be offered through LG Telecom — of all carriers — for something in the range of 500,000 won (about $550) before rebates.[Via textually.org] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Google’s Android platform and the Open Handset Alliance: a quick round-up
Filed under: Cellphones, HandheldsCarefully orchestrated announcements for broad, sweeping initiatives like the one staged by Google today don’t always do a great job of diving straight into the meat and telling it like it is, so we thought we’d boil down the Android and Open Handset Alliance sitch as best we could into a tight, easy to digest series of bullets. If this list is still wider than your attention span, though, just know this: you can pick up your Google-powered phone in the latter half of 2008. At its core, Android forms the basis for Google’s operating system and supporting software for phones. In Google’s own words, it’s a software stack. Two separate but related entities form the basis for today’s announcement: the Linux-based Android mobile platform (a result of Google’s 2005 acquisition of a start-up of the same name) and the Open Handset Alliance, a 33-strong group of device manufacturers, component manufacturers, software companies, and carriers that have committed to working with Android. There is no cut and dried “Gphone” and Google doesn’t intend (or at least it hasn’t indicated an intent) to enter the hardware business. Instead, it’ll leave that to established players like HTC, LG, and Samsung — and theoretically, anyone else that wants to have a go at it since the Android platform and its code base is wide open. Unlike the platform itself, there’s no guarantee that devices based on the Android platform will be open to third party developers. Google says that’ll be left to manufacturers and carriers to be decide, although it doubts they’ll choose to lock them down (hmm, has Google ever worked with a carrier before?) Nokia, Apple (on whose board Google CEO Eric Schmidt sits), Palm, and Microsoft are notably absent from the alliance. Palm has come out today to announce that it intends to continue to integrate Google services into its future products. Carriers currently in the alliance include China Mobile, KDDI, NTT DoCoMo, Sprint Nextel, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, and T-Mobile. T-Mobile and Sprint Nextel are the two national US carriers that are signed up; AT&T and Verizon are not. The first Android-powered devices are expected in the second half of 2008. Rumor has it that Google has been using an HTC-sourced device, the “Dream,” to demonstrate Android to potential partners. HTC may launch a version of the Dream as one of its first handsets to use the platform.  Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Russian spy plane to be re-purposed as cellphone tower
Filed under: Cellphones, Transportation We’ve already seen balloons used to provide cellphone service, but it looks like the Russians could soon be putting that setup to shame, with one of its Myasishchev M-55 spy planes now reportedly set to be demoed as a makeshift cellphone tower early next year. That’ll apparently happen in Malaysia over the course of February and March, but it seems like that could just be the beginning, with one “unnamed Western firm” said to be in discussions with the aircraft’s manufacturer about the possibility of resuming production of the planes specifically for this purpose. Among other things, that would allow the plane to used to provide cellphone service in disaster areas, with its 17,000 meter altitude and 5,000 kilometer range allowing it to cover a wide range on the ground with relative ease.[Via textually.org]  Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

The Nokia Music Store video review — hint: a “doddle” is good
Filed under: Cellphones, Portable Audio Unless you’re living in the UK, it’s hard to get your hands dirty with Nokia’s new Music Store. Unless you’re living under rock, you know that it’s Nokia’s intention to take the service global as it vies for dominance over digital downloads. Fortunately, a quickie, video review from Nokia’s new N81 has been posted by NokNok.tv. They claim that “hunting out tracks is a doddle, as is downloading.” A good thing, apparently, judging by the 4 / 5 stars awarded. Check the action after the break.Continue reading The Nokia Music Store video review — hint: a “doddle” is good Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Palm confirms it’ll be skipping the Android party
Filed under: Cellphones We expected just as much, but now it’s in writing: Palm sent us an official response to our gently-worded “assimilate or die” editorial. It goes as follows:”Palm has always been committed to open platforms for developers. And Palm has the added differentiation of being able to tightly integrate the software platform with our hardware design, which we believe gives us an advantage in delivering a great user experience.Palm customers have benefited from the availability of Google services on Palm’s platform, such as Google Maps for mobile on Palm OS. And we look forward to further collaboration with Google to offer great user experiences on Palm products.”While we’re glad they responded, we really hope we don’t have to wait a year and a half for Palm to prove us all wrong here. Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

New iTunes hints at iPhone disk use and voice memos?
Filed under: CellphonesIf you hadn’t heard, iTunes 7.5 hit today, and while we were all busy yawning at the seemingly insignificant update, MacRumors Forums user “FreeState” was checking out some localized strings and tracked down a few gems. Number 4320.069 asks if you’re “sure you want to manually manage your music on your iPhone?” Yeah, we’re sure. While 4320.073 teases that “Enabling the iPhone for disk use requires manually ejecting the iPhone before each disconnect, even when automatically syncing music.” We can live with those demands. Mr. 4320.075 is a bit more generic, but 4320.082 is the sexiest of the bunch: “The iPhone “^1″ contains new voice memos. Would you like to move these voice memos to your iTunes library?” We’ve been waiting for months for the iPhone to add that no-brainer feature, so here’s hoping that the next iPhone update will be swift and promise-fulfilling. Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Symbian, Nokia, Microsoft and Apple downplay Android relevance
Filed under: CellphonesPalm’s not the only company that isn’t afraid to speak out on the Open Handset Alliance. Nokia, Microsoft and Symbian made it most clear today that they don’t perceive danger from the new initiative and corresponding Android OS, with Nokia stating it quite bluntly: “We don’t see this as a threat.” Microsoft was a bit more on the defensive. “It really sounds that they are getting a whole bunch of people together to build a phone and that’s something we’ve been doing for five years,” said Scott Horn, from Microsoft’s Windows Mobile marketing team. “I don’t understand the impact that they are going to have.” The Symbian folks stated the obvious: “If Google was not involved the industry would have just yawned and rolled over,” said John Forsyth of Symbian. “We take it seriously but we are the ones with real phones, real phone platforms and a wealth of volume built up over years.” UIQ was a bit more optimistic about the OHA, saying that “Generally, it’s positive for the industry.” Apple wasn’t as commital either way. “We have a great relationship with Google and this doesn’t change anything,” said Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris. “They are certainly an important partner for iPhone.” Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!
