The Onyx – Synaptics’ ClearPad concept phone (Unlocking Mobile)

Friday, August 25th, 2006

The Onyx – Synaptics’ ClearPad concept phone
Filed under: CellphonesThis is totally on the concept design tip and so won’t ever actually be produced, but check out the Onyx, a prototype handset that Synaptics and Pilotfish put together that uses Synaptics’ new ClearPad touch screen. We’re still not totally sold on button-less phones — we crave the tactility — but the Onyx lets you do stuff like close an app by drawing an “X” over it with your finger, send messages by swiping them off the screen, and answer a call simply by placing the phone against your cheek. Don’t expect to ever actually get your hands on the Onyx, but Synaptics is planning to make ClearPad available to manufacturers around the end of the year, so there’s a decent chance that phones like it could start showing up within a couple of years.[Via Core77]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

CE-Oh no he didn’t! Part XII – Kiloo exec extolls virtues of crack cocaine business model
Filed under: Cellphones, GamingWe usually don’t have to wait long for some tech industry exec to give us new fodder for CE-Oh no he didn’t!, and Karl Woods, pusherman/Executive Vice President of sales and marketing for mobile developer and publisher Kiloo delivered the goods earlier this week. He decided we should witness the strength of his street knowledge by comparing his job of marketing mobile games to, and we’re quoting here, “the crack cocaine model.” (Could someone tell him that his company is named “Kiloo,” not “Kilo”?) Says Woods: “You offer the customer a free rock, and they get hooked. That’s what we’re going to have to do with the 90 per cent. But everyone has to do it, the whole industry has to try and crack this, or we’ll just keep fighting over that 10 percent.”We feel you, Karl. All the crackhouses on our block learned years ago how to stop fighting over that 10 percent and go after the mass market. [Via MoCoNews]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The $500 GSM rotary phone
Filed under: Cellphones Sure, we’re guessing the belt holster is a bit unwieldy, but the decades-old chassis on Spark Fun’s “portable” rotary phone is probably every bit as sturdy as the Symbol MC70′s for one-quarter the cash. Tech Faith (Unlocking Mobile) Wireless sells 501 under UBiQUio brand

Tech Faith Wireless sells 501 under UBiQUio brand
Filed under: Cellphones Looks like the TechFaith Q-killer’s finally headed into the discerning hands of the general public under the UBiQUio brand, outfitted with a more BenQ P50-like keyboard, and badged with the model number 501 (as listed on Expansys). You’d have thought a device from a still-no name Chinese ODM would require a little less cash from your pocketbook than the $514 it’s being sold for, but aside from having a touchscreen and running Pocket PC, little did you know this thing also has 64MB flash memory, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 1.2 with A2DP, 2 megapixel camera, miniSD slot, and a mini USB port? Motorizon better just hope like the dickens that TechFaith doesn’t find someone like Cingular to pick ‘em up Stateside — though that could be a while, considering the 501 is still tri-band with 900MHz, and only has GPRS class 10. A device just can’t be perfect, can it?[Via MobilitySite]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

i-mate sheds HTC for Pocket PC Q-killer?
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds With info and pic originating from Hungary, you know it’s gotta be good. Someone over at HowardForums just spotted this new, unconfirmed i-mate model, the i-mate Jaq, at Hungarian site PDA Mania, and were kind enough to share. Notably, i-mate doesn’t appear to be relying on HTC (who has that little Q-killer of their own brewin’) for the design here, and while their in-house designers might take a little while to warm up, a bit of diversity in the market never killed anyone. Also of note is that this phone purportedly runs the full-fledged Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition, allowing pen input on its QVGA screen and the software advantages that OS provides. As for the rest of the specs, the phone is a quad-band GSM, GPRS and EDGE unit, with 64MB of RAM, 128MB of ROM and a miniSD slot for expansion. There is IrDA and Bluetooth 1.2, but no WiFi, and the 1.3 megapixel camera is a bit lackluster these days, but with that QWERTY action this just might turn out to be a decent contender from i-mate.[Via HowardForums]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

ROAD keeps their Linux Handy-PC concept alive
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds Announced way back in February 2005, ROAD has been promising this Handy-PC Linux dreamphone of theirs for a while now, and even stated in late 2005 that they’d have it out by Q1 2006. Well, it still hasn’t materialized, but their new concept version of the phone looks a tad snazzier and a bit more for-reals. The specs haven’t really gone anywhere, it’s still a QWERTZ clamshell with Bluetooth, WiFi, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and a 640 x 240 display. When closed the unit acts like a slightly chunky candybar (pictured after the break) — ala Nokia 9300 — with a 102 x 65 monochrome display. What’s new is a fleshed out Qtopia GUI (the Handy-PC was still running Windows screenshots back when we saw it last), which looks functional, if a tad busy. The device is powered by a 400MHz Xscale CPU, and comes in two flavors: the S101 and S101K, the latter of which adds a 2 megapixel camera and encryption of some sort. You can “advance order” your very own Handy-PC right now, but since there’s no word on when it will be available, or for how much, we figure we’re in for a bit of a wait yet.[Via El Reg] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Terrorist plot results in air ban of gadgets
Filed under: Cellphones, Digital Cameras, LaptopsAs you may or may not have heard, this morning Scotland Yard announced 21 people were arrested in connection with a supposed terrorist plot to use liquid explosives onboard. The result was obviously arduous for travelers who suffered suspended flights and long lines — certainly a better fate than the possible alternative — but the collateral inconveniences were also rather interesting. Authorities banned bringing aboard liquids, gels, or lotions (aside from medicines and sustenance for small children), as well as effectively scrapping travelers’ ability to carry on laptops, cameras, or cellphones until further notice. Pretty severe for those looking to get some work done or pass time on their flight, but anyone lucky enough to get on a plane in England today is probably more relieved than irritated. Just be sure these guys don’t lose your luggage, ok?[Thanks, Cyrus]Update: For clarification, as far as we know gadgets are still allowed on American flights — this precedent pertains primarily only to British and possibly some European flights.Update 2: Looks like things are loosening up a bit, and passengers can start carrying on a bit of baggage themselves. For more info peep the Beeb. Thanks Stewart.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Treo 700wx already here, videos already out
Filed under: CellphonesWe didn’t even have a chance to hook you peeps up with the latest video of the new Treo 700wx that’s been circulating around the internets, and already did Palm decid to loose ‘em on the unsuspecting QWERTY addicts of the LA metro area — however undoubtedly unintentionally. It seems at least one Palm retail store in SoCal is already stocking 700wxs, according to Gadgets on the Go: the Palm Retail store at The Grove (the very same one we happened upon not a few weeks back; kind of quaint, smooshed next to a L’Occitane) supposedly already has stock in store ready for sale, which means it’s probably not unfair to assume other stores might have them as well. Now, whether you’ll be able to get them to sell you the devices as easily is another question entirely, but for those without a Palm retail store nearby, it’s not unfair to assume you’ll be able to get one at a regular carrier outlet in the very, very near future.Update: We’re getting reports that the device will go for $619, $649, and will see release August 31st — in other words, we aren’t yet 100% of anything, but as before, expect it shortly, and probably in the $600 range.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Palm chooses September to announce new Treo
Filed under: Cellphones, HandheldsOne might argue we’ve collected enough intelligence at this point to make an official announcement ourselves, but according to a Reuters report, Palm has committed to unveiling at least one of its next-gen Treos for reals (without our help) next month. From the way Palm is talking, it sounds like this debut will be for the Windows Mobile-based UMTS model first mentioned for Vodafone in July, though we’re guessing Cingular’s Treo 750 isn’t far behind (right, Palm?). Other than that tidbit, Palm’s asking us all to patiently wait for the September 12 when the press releases start flying — but one thing we can say with near certainty is that there won’t be a stub antenna anywhere in sight.[Thanks, Dave]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

PalmSource and Access drop more info on their ALP OS
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds The recent months have been dark days indeed for the Palm OS, especially for its spiritual successor, codenamed Access Linux Platform (ALP). Palm is letting its license to the oft-delayed OS expire this December, and we haven’t heard of too many device manufacturers stepping in its place. The good news is that Access-owned PalmSource hasn’t been just sitting around a doing nothing, and they recently hosted a one day mini-conference at LinuxWorld to show off their wares so far. Apparently the core OS is fairly completed, and PalmSource is mainly working on the bundled applications that will ship with the OS. Classic Palm OS emulation is said to work perfectly well, even with the requirement by the OS to scale those 320 x 320 native applications to ALP’s preferred QVGA touchscreen resolution. There were plenty of Haier N60 flip-phones on hand running the chosen res, along with a few prototypes with VGA screens and a keyboard — a good sign of things to come. Unfortunately, the only pics allowed were of the developer tools running a virtualized version of ALP in Ubuntu — a boon to developers, but no device-based eye candy for us. The biggest enhancement so far is multitasking afforded by the Linux base, though sexy features in the NetFront browser, new HotSync interoperability standards, and a newfound return to Palm OS looks of yore seem quite popular as well. In fact, with the OS’s ability to be skinned with SVG graphics, Palm could conceivably make a branded version of the OS that would be quite familiar to old users, and dub it the Palm OS 6 we’ve always wanted. PalmSource says they’re still on track to deliver the OS to licensees at the end of the year, with the first ALP products finally emerging next spring.[Via BrighthandRead | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Lenovo unveils Cingular-enabled WWAN ThinkPad T60
Filed under: Cellphones, Laptops, WirelessAll of you Cingular users who are happily toting that Dell already know how splendid built-in UMTS / HSDPA-based technology can be, and you Verizon customers with MacBook Pros now have your very own EV-DO ExpressCard to gloat about, but America’s “favorite” GSM provider has paired up with Lenovo to unveil the latest ThinkPad T60. For those who just ain’t feeling the protruding Novatel apparatus, this WWAN-integrated machine comes with Cingular’s BroadbandConnect hardware pre-installed, as well as a communication manager that “easily establishes connections” to service, and Lenovo’s own ThinkVantage software is thrown in to automatically activate / deactivate the host of wireless capabilities based on your in-range options. The specs on this T60 — aside from the WWAN amenities — is on par with other non-Cingular editions, and sports a 14.1-inch SXGA+ display, 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, 80GB hard drive, 64MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 graphics, 802.11a/b/g, and a DVD burner. The Cingular-enabled T60, which is amazingly not tattooed by a barrage of little orange stickers, is available now to curb your 3G notebook cravings for $1,899.[Via Slashphone]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
