Windows CE 6 previewed
Filed under: Cellphones, HandheldsMicrosoft just dolled-up Windows CE in a new beta dress dubbed Windows CE 6 and turned her out at the Mobile and Embedded DevCon show in Vegas baby, Las Vegas. The new flavor of this embedded OS features a redesigned kernel with expanded capacity for up to 32k simultaneous processes while remaining true to the features and functionality of previous CE generations. So what the hell does that mean to you? Well, as the basis for Windows Mobile we should see new products based on both embedded CE (set-top boxes, industrial automation and medical devices) as well as sophisticated SmartPhones and PocketPCs coming sometime in 2007.[Thanks, kerunt]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Patent holder Visto wants a share of that RIM pie
Filed under: CellphonesYou know, it has been a bit RIM-patent-fiasco-free around these parts lately. But no worries, since Visto has decided to whip up a bit (more) patent trouble of their own. Fresh off a victory over Seven Networks regarding the same four patents that they claim RIM is infringing, and already mired in legal fights with RIM competitor Good Technology and Microsoft, Visto is looking for more, and they think they can get a payout from RIM. Visto wasn’t clear as to what RIM technology is infringing on their patents, but they do mention “Visto’s intellectual property serves as the basis for this industry’s birth.” Quite the strong words when going up against RIM, who had a slight influence on the birth of the wireless email industry if our memory serves us right. RIM believes that the Visto patents are invalid, and that Visto’s victory over Seven Networks was in regards to a different type of technology than RIM’s. Their patents are also dated before Visto’s, but there’s really no telling where this could go after the fiasco the NTP case turned out to be. We’ll keep you posted.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Treo launch rumor adds a price: $399 / $499
Filed under: Cellphones, HandheldsLast we heard from our insider in the biz, Palm was going to be launching their PalmOS-powered Treo 700p sometime around or on Monday, May 15th. Now it would seem Gadgets on the Go’s gotten word from a source they deem reliable that the 700p’s got a price: $399 for a new 2 year contract, $499 with a 1 year contract.  (Oh, they also confirmed the same release time frame we had — mid May ideally, early June at latest.) That sounds about right if you ask us, but there’s only one way to find out: wait for the launch. Ok, well, two ways: we’ll keep on inquiring, ourselves. Stay tuned, Treo nuts.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Palm Treo 700p on Verizon sooner than we think?
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds You aren’t sick of seeing shots of what is supposed to maybe probably should be the Palm Treo 700p, are you? No? Good, because we’d like to introduce the latest blurry cameraphone set, now with Verizon branding. Yes, Verizon Palm users, rejoice (tentatively, anyway)! Sprint users, however, should beware; even though we heard from a pretty reliable source that this thing was getting a Sprint launch about this time next month, you know how Verizon loves to swoop in with those handset exclusivity contracts. We’re not saying Sprint users won’t be getting this thing first, but things are definitely looking up for Verizon peeps.[Via Gadgets On The Go]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Motorola’s RAZR 2 / Canary pics!
Filed under: Cellphones Remember The Boy Genius, the dude who scored those CDMA Q shots way back in the year 2005? He’s back, and hooked us up with some shots of Motorola’s Canary, what we understand to be the true successor to the RAZR. Contrary to prior reports that this thing would run Windows Mobile, you can plainly see that it doesn’t; we understand it uses the same software build as the RAZR V3x, which might imply it’s a UMTS device as well. A second trustworthy source let us know that the device would pack a 2 megapixel camera, and would be positioned as Moto’s new flagship phone due for Q4 2006 or Q1 2007 launch, which jibes with everything else we’ve been hearing, and starts to pull this picture together. More pics after the break!P.S. It’s worth noting, as we’re told, that this phone is more or less just as thin as the original RAZR, just not as wide. And that’s supposedly not a plastic exterior, but a soft-touch finish and aluminum detailing. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Geoff Goodfellow, early inventor of wireless email, profiled
Filed under: CellphonesBack in the early 80s a man by the name of Geoff Goodfellow had an idea: to relay electronic mail from Arpanet to his alphanumeric pager. He published his concept on an Arpanet mailing list in 1982 (he called his piece “Electronic Mail for People on the Move”), and went on to found RadioMail in the early 1990s — a wireless email service (surprise, surprise). After working with such small clients and partners as Ericsson, Motorola, and RIM, Goodfellow left the biz in 1996 and moved to Europe. But he was contacted in early 2002 by James H. Wallace Jr., a lawyer of patent-holding firm NTP, who thoroughly researched Goodfellow’s contributions to wireless communications as they were gearing up to take on Research In Motion. In fact, Wallace once introduced Goodfellow thusly: “Geoff’s the inventor of wireless e-mail. My client patented some of its implementation workings.” The New York Times seems to think Goodfellow’s prior art should have been disclosed during the RIM / NTP dispute, but wasn’t; that Goodfellow should have been available as a fact witness, but wasn’t. So why has no one ever heard of the talented Mr. Goodfellow? Because NTP paid him close to $20,000 for “consulting” in 2002, which included several sessions with NTP’s lawyers in noteless meetings, as well as a contract and NDA that essentially barred him from discussing the case while it proceeded. You’ll have to read the Times profile for the full story, but whether or not NTP acted ethically (or illegally), or preyed on Goodfellow’s disdain for patents or his free-market attitude isn’t exactly making the bad taste in our mouths from the settlement taste any better.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Apple patents audio user interface
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds, Portable Audio, Portable VideoAnother day, another Apple patent filing. This time, Apple calls dibs on an “audio user interface for computing devices.” Nothing new right? Afterall, we’ve had audio assisted navigation for years. The system described however, uses the relative power of a host system to auto-generate audio tags from text strings which can then be played by a hand-held device such as an “MP3 player, mobile phone, or PDA.” Still not following? Ok, imagine a system whereby your PC or Mac automatically converts the metadata stored on your iTunes Music Store purchases — you know, song or video title, artist, album, episode, etc — into audio tags which are then synch’d to your video iPod, iPhone, or Apple handheld via iTunes thereby allowing you to find and play your favorite song, playlist, whutevah without ever looking at the device and straining your eyes. And since this could likely be a software only enhancement to existing Apple ‘ware, implementing it could be just be a free, point-release upgrade away… hear that display-less Shuffle owners?[Via Unwired View, Thanks Staska]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Motorola Q gets FCC nod
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds So, what’s been holding up the launch of the Motorola Q? Well, we’re not gonna speculate about the inner workings of Moto, Verizon and all the other parties to this long-delayed Smartphone. But there’s at least one bottleneck that we can confirm has been broken: the CDMA Q has now cleared the FCC. Does that mean the phone is going to be out this week, this month (this year)? Who knows? However, the fact that we’ve already seen it added to Verizon’s online image library could mean there’s finally light at the end of this long tunnel. Ogo a go in Germany with CT-17 for 1&1
Filed under: Cellphones, Wireless IXI Mobile has made good on its MacArthur-like promise to return to the mobile messaging arena, with the launch of the CT-17 in Germany. As previously reported, the handheld will be selling for about $60, with monthly plans, marketed through 1&1 as the Pocket Web service, starting at about $12. Unlike IXI’s original effort, the text-centric AT&T Ogo (which IXI still markets in some countries), the CT-17 has broad support for a range of services, including web access and voice features (via an external headset). Voice and web functions were among the reasons for the original Ogo’s failure to catch on (that and the fact that AT&T sort of lost interest in it amid the company’s acquisition by Cingular). PocketWeb is being positioned as a lower-cost competitor to products like the Sidekick and BlackBerry, and with the new features and attractive pricing, the Ogo may just be a go this time around.[Thanks, Jerry]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

It’s Earth Day — so don’t just toss your old computer!
Filed under: Cellphones, Desktops, Misc. Gadgets, Laptops It’s Earth Day today, and the consumer electronics industry isn’t above a little shameless self-promotion to show off their green cred. And, we have to admit, recycling your old gear is a lot better than just tossing it into the basement — or worse, a landfill. So follow the examples of these companies, and make your gear green! Apple Computer will pay for shipping and environmentally friendly disposal of any old computer with the purchase of a new Mac from the company’s retail or online stores. So, if you’re a switcher, you can now let Apple deal with getting rid of that old Windows box, and if you’re upgrading, Apple will give that old Quadra a proper send-off.  Sprint Nextel will spring for shipping and recycling or disposal of any brand of cellphone — and you don’t even need to buy anything. Just grab a prepaid mailing label from Sprint’s web site, stuff your phone in an envelope and send it off. So forget about the sentimental value already and send off that MicroTAC. Verizon Wireless will also accept any old cellphone for recycling — but you have to bring it into one of their stores. But, hey, at least they’re trying. CTIA has more info about cellphone recycling programs nationwide. Dell offers something called the Asset Recovery Program. It’s similar to Apple’s plan, but it’s only good for corporate customers. So, if you’re an IT manager and you’re about to upgrade, get Dell to clear out your old stuff, dude. Staples will give you $30 worth of coupons if you drop off an old computer for recycling — at least at certain Chicago-area stores. We hope the coupons are good on items like recycled printer paper, so you can double your greenie points. 100 Percent Day is a project sponsored by Microsoft, Intel, the US Chamber of Commerce and others with the goal of collecting 100,000 computers for recycling — today. The project’s web site has a list of dropoff locations where you can bring your gear. For more ideas, visit the official Earth Day web site. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Nokia’s N73 and N93 launched
Filed under: Cellphones Well hello there N73 (bottom) and N93, how nice to see you in the for realz at last. Other than finally making these phones official we don’t really have too much new information to offer. Both models run Series 60 3rd Edition and feature large 2.4-inch 262k color QVGA displays, Bluetooth 2.0, a MiniSD slot, MP3 / ACC media players, FM radio with Visual Radio, and a chubby 3.2 megapixel shooter with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, mechanical shutter, and integrated flash. Want to share those snaps? Coolio daddy-o, ’cause a new partnership with Flickr gives you the ability to upload and add comments to your photos directly from your new N-series cellphone without the need to download any additional software (don’t forget to ZoneTag!). The N73 will launch as both a quad-band GSM / EDGE model and another which includes 3G (2100MHz UMTS). It features 42MB of on-board memory and 3D stereo speakers at the top and bottom of the unit to kick out some tinny jams. Meanwhile the N92-lookin’ N93 turns out 900 / 1800 / 1900 GSM / EDGE and 3G (2100MHz UMTS), 50MB built-in memory, 802.11b/g, UPnP, TV-out, and adds a 3x optical zoom to the camera, which can record MPEG-4 VGA video at 30fps. If you’re looking for mobile TV, you’ll have to stick with the N92 though, since the N93 does not feature a DVB-H tuner. Both will drop in July; welcome to the show, boys. Palm Treo 700p and BlackBerry 7130i to launch May 28th?
Filed under: Cellphones Looks like Sprint may have slightly delayed the launch everybody, to May 28th, according to what appears to be an internal launch calendar that was leaked to TreoCentral’s discussion boards. It pretty much clearly outlines the Treo 700p getting launched alongside the Blackberry 7130i and LG LX550 — which seems a little odd that they’d cloud the launch of a new flagship smartphone with two slightly less buzzworthy devices. That is unless they want these phones to ride the Treo’s coattails. Either way, guess now we’ll know what’s up if and when mid-May passes without word about the phone.P.S. - Did you know it’s Sprint’s five-star service month? All other months are apparently four or less stars. So be warned, if you have to call for support, contract issues, service changes, or anything else that might require you speaking to a Sprint rep, do it in May.[Via Gadgets on the Go]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

More sweet chocolate from LG: the “Black Label II”

More sweet chocolate from LG: the “Black Label II”
Filed under: CellphonesLG just unveiled the next generation of its popular “Chocolate” phone at the recent Expo Comm Wireless Korea 2006, and it seems to maintain the same features and minimalist elegance as its predecessor in a slightly thicker package (16.5-millimeters versus the original’s 15.3). Also called the “Black Label II” or by its model number, KV6000, this handset is primarily targeted at the fashion-conscious crowd who also want to snap a pic or rock out to tunes once in awhile, letting them load the 512MB of memory with up to 120 MP3 tracks. Starting price for this newest bit of Chocolate is around $530, but it will probably only be seen on the streets of Seoul for the time being.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Keepin’ it real fake, part XXVII: Samsung admits to knocking off Apple
Filed under: Cellphones We all know the Korean companies raging against the Chinese knockoff artists aren’t exactly innocent of taking “design inspiration” themselves. As soon as one comes up with an original design, the other knocks it off and vice versa until it spins out of control into hideously mutated 10 megapixel cameraphones. But one thing you won’t see them do is admit it — until now. We’re lacking hard detail on the assuredly pride-crushing debacle, but according to Telecoms Korea, in an interview with Korean publication Yonhap News Samsung fessed up to plagiarizing the menu icons and design work in their SCH-V890 and SPH-V8900 handsets from none other than Cupertino’s finest. Not that anyone should really be surprised or anything that a company knocked off Apple’s design, but you know what they say about the steps to recovery: the first step is admission that you have a problem.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Hyon’s VT-300 music player doubles as Bluetooth headset
Filed under: Cellphones, Peripherals, Portable Audio If you’re tired of all those phones trying to step on your music player’s toes with included, yet clunky, MP3 functionality, fight back with Hyon’s new VT-300 device that includes what is most likely clunky Bluetooth headset functionality along with regular music playback. Along with your usual music playback, voice recording, and FM functions, the VT-300 can manage most phone functions like receiving calls and text messages, or even dialing numbers from you phonebook using the color LCD display. It also sounds an alarm if it strays to far from your phone while its paired over Bluetooth, to prevent theft and to provide for awkward social situations. Sizes range from 128MB to 1GB, but there’s no word on price or availability. We’re guessing “cheap” and “Korea.” [Via Phoneyworld]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
