New iTunes hints at iPhone disk use and voice memos?
Filed under: CellphonesIf you hadn’t heard, iTunes 7.5 hit today, and while we were all busy yawning at the seemingly insignificant update, MacRumors Forums user “FreeState” was checking out some localized strings and tracked down a few gems. Number 4320.069 asks if you’re “sure you want to manually manage your music on your iPhone?” Yeah, we’re sure. While 4320.073 teases that “Enabling the iPhone for disk use requires manually ejecting the iPhone before each disconnect, even when automatically syncing music.” We can live with those demands. Mr. 4320.075 is a bit more generic, but 4320.082 is the sexiest of the bunch: “The iPhone “^1″ contains new voice memos. Would you like to move these voice memos to your iTunes library?” We’ve been waiting for months for the iPhone to add that no-brainer feature, so here’s hoping that the next iPhone update will be swift and promise-fulfilling. Samsung follows crowd, preps M4650 Windows Mobile touchphone
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds Don’t be fooled: Samsung officially calls this the M4650 Multi-Touch, but get this, it doesn’t support multi-touch. It does support single touches of its 2.8 inch screen, though, which’ll have to do seeing how it lacks either numeric or QWERTY keypads. The Korean company is prepping the Windows Mobile 6-based touchphone for its domestic market, matching a recent trend toward keyless, finger-friendly input that LG, HTC, Apple, and others have adopted in recent months. A customized build of Windows Mobile isn’t the only trick up the handset’s sleeve, either: haptics give users a little bit of positive feedback when they make contact with the display, and when Office Mobile finally ceases to be entertaining, the terrestrial DMB tuner should come in handy. Ironically, the M4650 will be offered through LG Telecom — of all carriers — for something in the range of 500,000 won (about $550) before rebates.[Via textually.org] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Symbian, Nokia, Microsoft and Apple downplay Android relevance
Filed under: CellphonesPalm’s not the only company that isn’t afraid to speak out on the Open Handset Alliance. Nokia, Microsoft and Symbian made it most clear today that they don’t perceive danger from the new initiative and corresponding Android OS, with Nokia stating it quite bluntly: “We don’t see this as a threat.” Microsoft was a bit more on the defensive. “It really sounds that they are getting a whole bunch of people together to build a phone and that’s something we’ve been doing for five years,” said Scott Horn, from Microsoft’s Windows Mobile marketing team. “I don’t understand the impact that they are going to have.” The Symbian folks stated the obvious: “If Google was not involved the industry would have just yawned and rolled over,” said John Forsyth of Symbian. “We take it seriously but we are the ones with real phones, real phone platforms and a wealth of volume built up over years.” UIQ was a bit more optimistic about the OHA, saying that “Generally, it’s positive for the industry.” Apple wasn’t as commital either way. “We have a great relationship with Google and this doesn’t change anything,” said Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris. “They are certainly an important partner for iPhone.” Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!
