Filed under: Cellphones, HandheldsMicrosoft just dolled-up Windows CE in a new beta dress dubbed Windows CE 6 and turned her out at the Mobile and Embedded DevCon show in Vegas baby, Las Vegas. The new flavor of this embedded OS features a redesigned kernel with expanded capacity for up to 32k simultaneous processes while remaining true to the features and functionality of previous CE generations. So what the hell does that mean to you? Patent holder Visto wants a share of that RIM pie
Filed under: CellphonesYou know, it has been a bit RIM-patent-fiasco-free around these parts lately. But no worries, since Visto has decided to whip up a bit (more) patent trouble of their own. Fresh off a victory over Seven Networks regarding the same four patents that they claim RIM is infringing, and already mired in legal fights with RIM competitor Good Technology and Microsoft, Visto is looking for more, and they think they can get a payout from RIM. Visto wasn’t clear as to what RIM technology is infringing on their patents, but they do mention “Visto’s intellectual property serves as the basis for this industry’s birth.” Quite the strong words when going up against RIM, who had a slight influence on the birth of the wireless email industry if our memory serves us right. RIM believes that the Visto patents are invalid, and that Visto’s victory over Seven Networks was in regards to a different type of technology than RIM’s. Their patents are also dated before Visto’s, but there’s really no telling where this could go after the fiasco the NTP case turned out to be. Treo launch rumor adds a price: $399 / $499
Filed under: Cellphones, HandheldsLast we heard from our insider in the biz, Palm was going to be launching their PalmOS-powered Treo 700p sometime around or on Monday, May 15th. Now it would seem Gadgets on the Go’s gotten word from a source they deem reliable that the 700p’s got a price: $399 for a new 2 year contract, $499 with a 1 year contract. (Oh, they also confirmed the same release time frame we had — mid May ideally, early June at latest.) That sounds about right if you ask us, but there’s only one way to find out: wait for the launch. Palm Treo 700p on Verizon sooner than we think?
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds You aren’t sick of seeing shots of what is supposed to maybe probably should be the Palm Treo 700p, are you? No? Good, because we’d like to introduce the latest blurry cameraphone set, now with Verizon branding. Yes, Verizon Palm users, rejoice (tentatively, anyway)! Sprint users, however, should beware; even though we heard from a pretty reliable source that this thing was getting a Sprint launch about this time next month, you know how Verizon loves to swoop in with those handset exclusivity contracts. Motorola’s RAZR 2 / Canary pics!
Filed under: Cellphones Remember The Boy Genius, the dude who scored those CDMA Q shots way back in the year 2005? He’s back, and hooked us up with some shots of Motorola’s Canary, what we understand to be the true successor to the RAZR. Contrary to prior reports that this thing would run Windows Mobile, you can plainly see that it doesn’t; we understand it uses the same software build as the RAZR V3x, which might imply it’s a UMTS device as well. A second trustworthy source let us know that the device would pack a 2 megapixel camera, and would be positioned as Moto’s new flagship phone due for Q4 2006 or Q1 2007 launch, which jibes with everything else we’ve been hearing, and starts to pull this picture together. More pics after the break!P.S. It’s worth noting, as we’re told, that this phone is more or less just as thin as the original RAZR, just not as wide.
